Beyond the Wreck: Uncovering the Hidden Gems of Pari Island

Beyond the Wreck: Uncovering the Hidden Gems of Pari Island
For Jakarta-based divers, Pari Island in the Thousand Islands is a familiar name. It's our go-to weekend escape, a quick boat ride away from the city's hustle. Many divers have logged dives at its well-known wreck, checked it off their list, and moved on.

But what if we told you there's more to Pari than meets the eye?

At Rumah Selam, we believe the true magic of a location lies in its hidden corners. We've spent countless hours exploring the waters around Pari, and we're here to share some of its best-kept secrets. It's time to rediscover this local gem.

1. The "Secret" Coral Garden

Just a short boat ride away from the main wreck lies a sprawling coral garden that many divers miss. Unlike the dramatic structure of a wreck, this site offers a different kind of beauty. Fields of table corals, branching acropora, and colorful soft corals create a breathtaking underwater landscape.

What to Expect: Calm conditions with minimal current, making it perfect for a relaxing second dive. Visibility is often excellent, reaching up to 15-20 meters.

Marine Life: This is a macro photographer's paradise! Look closely for nudibranchs of all shapes and colors, cleaner shrimp hiding in anemones, and the occasional ornate ghost pipefish.

2. Turtle Alley

On the island's eastern side, a gentle slope is affectionately known to our divemasters as "Turtle Alley." While sightings are never guaranteed in the wild, this spot is your best bet for a serene encounter with Green Sea Turtles. We often find them munching on seagrass or simply cruising by.

Best Time to Dive: Morning dives tend to be more active.

Pro Tip: Remember to approach them slowly and from the side, giving them plenty of space. The key to a great turtle encounter is to be a calm and respectful observer.

3. The Jetty Pillars

Don't underestimate the dive site right under the local jetty! The pillars are encrusted with life and act as a magnet for juvenile fish seeking shelter. It's a fantastic spot for practicing your buoyancy while observing fascinating fish behavior.

What You'll See: Schools of fusiliers, damselfish, and lionfish often hang around the pillars. It's also a great spot to find moray eels peeking out from their crevices.

Good For: A shallow, easy dive that's full of life. Perfect for a checkout dive or for divers who haven't been in the water for a while.
